The demonstration which follows
is not intended as an in-depth instructional,
but rather a quick overview of the sequence of steps
required in computerized painting.Though replacing brush, canvas and paint with keyboards,
monitors and mousepads, the procedures used in creating digital art
are remarkably similar to that of any other media.Adobe Photoshop was used to create the following.

-----------------------------------------
A preliminary sketch is first developed
to determine the pose:

 -----------------------------------------
If the image has promise, it is then refined in a more detailed
rendering, xeroxed and scanned into the computer.

-----------------------------------------
The background is deleted, the figure resized and
placed on a new layer on top of the photographed
background.

-----------------------------------------
On a new layer, a base color is selected. The figure
layer is duplicated and placed above the base color
and opacity is reduced to 25%.

-----------------------------------------
A new layer called "Skin Tone 1" is created between the
base color layer and the figure copy layer.
A slightly darker color than the base color is selected
for skin tone 1 using the airbrush tool set at a low
pressure. The color is gradually applied to the
figure on the "Skin Tone 1" layer.

-----------------------------------------
The opacity of the figure copy layer allows you to determine
where the place the color.
NOTE: The figure layer copy and the photo background
have been removed for the sake of clarity.

-----------------------------------------
Skin tones gradually build up on several layers.

-----------------------------------------
A layer of red and yellow is added at a low opacity to warm up
the skin tones. Highlights are added and the photo background
replaced in order to evaluate the paintings progress.

-----------------------------------------
Skin tones are ddepened, noise is added to
give the skin texture.

-----------------------------------------
Hair, makeup and shoes are added. Built up over several
layers in the same manner the skin tones were created.

-----------------------------------------
The final painting.
The figure outline is cleaned up and smoothed out.
Shadows on the skin tone are further defined.
The background is slightly blurred and a cast
shadow is placed under the figure.
